I am writing as your constituent asking you to please attend the Backbench Business Debate on potential merits of a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements on Thursday 9 July and urgently call on the UK government to end all trade, including goods, services and investments, with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

As the International Court of Justice July 2024 Advisory Opinion affirmed, the UK Government is legally obliged not to aid or assist Israel’s illegal occupation but has failed in this regard. This requires an urgent course correction by our Government to ensure compliance with international law and an end to UK complicity. I therefore urge you to press the Government to:

1. Implement a comprehensive ban on settlement trade, including services and investments, under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018, with robust enforcement and anti-circumvention measures, aligned with UK policy on illegally occupied Ukrainian territory.

2. Identify and prevent all forms of support—financial, commercial, diplomatic, military or logistical—that contribute to maintaining Israel’s unlawful occupation.

3. Suspend the preferential UK-Israel Trade and Partnership Agreement until Israel complies fully with its human rights provisions and the ICJ Advisory Opinion of 19 July 2024.

4. Prohibit UK-based financial institutions and corporations from investing in or transacting with settlement-linked entities that sustain the occupation.

In January 2026, Joe, a British human rights monitor from the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), spent time with a Palestinian family in the South Hebron Hills of the occupied West Bank - Moussa, his wife Amal, and their two‑year‑old granddaughter, Hala. Their home sits directly beside an illegal Israeli hilltop settlement, leaving them under constant threat of settler violence. Moussa often sleeps only one or two hours a night for fear of an attack and has had to barricade his home with iron fencing and barbed wire to feel even a minimal sense of safety.  After several attacks, Moussa had to take the difficult decision of no longer taking his sheep out to graze the land to protect himself and his family.

His granddaughter, Hala, who is just two years old, is terrified of the settlers. She hides when new people arrive at her grandparents’ home. Last November, during the olive harvest, an Israeli settler threw a stone that hit Hala in the eye. Despite her pain, Moussa felt powerless to seek any justice.

This is the reality many Palestinians face in the West Bank and is just one reason why the UK must end all support for Israel’s illegal occupation, starting with a ban on all trade with illegal settlements.
